The Transcend MTE220S is a 4-lane PCI Express NVMe SSD in the M.2 (2280) form factor. The manufacturer has yet to publish complete information about this drive, but we will update this page once it becomes available. Here’s what we know so far.
Memory type, Controller and Cache
Transcend has revealed that MTE 220S is equipped with 3D NAND, which is not surprising as this is what a vast majority of new SSDs use today. 3D, or layered memory chips allow for both higher density and better performance compared to planar NAND. It is unclear whether Transcend has used MLC (multi-level cell) or TLC (triple-level cell) in the 220S. But the most likely candidate is TLC from one of the major NAND Flash manufacturers Micron or SanDisk.
A controller has not been specified either, but according to Transcend, the 220S comes with DDR3 DRAM as well as an SLC (single-level cell) cache. The use of an SLC cache is a further indication that the memory type used is of the TLC variety, as this would be needed to speed up write transfer rates in a TLC-based drive.
Performance
Due to the highly parallel nature of solid state drives, performance usually increases in line with an SSDs capacity. However, Transcend only discloses maximum theoretical performance numbers, likely meaning that the 3,500 MB/s read and 2,800 MB/s write speeds are valid for the larger 1 TB and/or the 512 GB capacities.

Warranty and Endurance
Once again, an ‘up to’ number is provided, which is a comparatively high 800 TBW for the 1 TB model. Inferring from this, the corresponding ratings for the 512 GB and 256 GB capacities would be 400 TBW and 200 TBW, respectively.
Transcend also offers an industry-standard 5-year warranty with the 220S.
