Description

MSI’s Gaming X design has been used for a fair few mid-range GPUs and they tend to be appreciated by users as well as professional reviewers. The GTX 1660 Super Gaming X is, unsurprisingly, very similar to its predecessor based on the original GTX 1660 chip, but this one has been upgraded with the GeForce GTX 1660 Super GPU. This improves performance by around 15% compared to the non-Super card and it’s only marginally slower than the 1660 Ti.

MSI GTX 1660 Super Gaming X Vs. Ventus Vs. Aero

The GTX 1660 Super options from MSI are practically identical to the preceding GTX 1660 lineup. Gaming X is the top-end model, which is complemented by the compact dual-fan Ventus and the Aero ITX – an even smaller, single-fan card for the most compact PC builds. All models are available with or without a small factory overclock.

Gaming X is the most expensive card in MSI’s GTX 1660S range, with RGB highlights and a slightly higher factory overclock compared to the other OC editions. Its increased boost clock results in a performance increase of around 3% over the default clock. All else being equal, however, the larger and more competent cooler should improve the overclocking possibilities for the user.

In comparison, the Ventus XS is also equipped with two fans but comes in a more compact design using smaller fans. The Aero ITX model is smaller still and uses only a single fan.  There are no changes to the VRAM clocks in any of the MSI 1660S cards. Naturally, all cards use the same TU116 GPU with 1,408 CUDA cores, which is unchanged from the non-Super predecessor. Only the VRAM has been upgraded from GDDR5 to GDDR6, upping the memory bandwidth from 192GB/s to 336 GB/s – enough to significantly boost performance.

Performance

The GTX 1660 Super is a mid-range GPU, and the slight factory overclock in cards such as the MSI GTX 1660S Gaming X does not result in any significant performance boost. Thanks to the improved memory bandwidth, all cards with the GTX 1660S are now considerably faster than the original model and only slightly slower than the GTX 1660 Ti.

Like all other GTX-series cards, there is no ray-tracing hardware or tensor cores as found in the upper mid-range and high-end RTX cards.

The above 3DMark Time Spy scores are averages from a range of systems running the same GPUs and are not specific to the MSI GTX 1660 Super Gaming X. It’s still a relatively accurate indication of relative gaming performance.

Reviews

Hexus.net:

… it could do with being £10 cheaper, but if you want a high-quality GTX 1660 Super, the MSI Gaming X delivers.

eTeknix:

Out of the box, this card is pretty well-tuned. It’ll beat out the other 1660 SUPER cards easily enough, but also offers a nice step up from the non-SUPER variants.
