Gigabyte’s GTX 1660 Super 3X WindForce is one of few 1660S graphics cards with three fans, meaning that it’s one of the physically largest cards based on the relatively frugal Nvidia TU116 chip. The base version (SKU: GV-N166SGAMING-6GD) ships with the model’s default 1785 MHz boost clock, whereas the OC model (SKU: GV-N166SGAMING OC-6GD) will boost to 1860 MHz.
Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super Gaming Overview
The GTX 1660S lineup from Gigabyte consists of single-, dual-, and triple-fan varieties with or without a factory overclock. In addition, there is a triple-fan Aorus 1660S with a similar design but a slightly higher boost clock than the WindForce 3X model that we are looking at here. For comparison, the Aorus 1660S will boost to 1875 MHz versus 1860 MHz – a 0.8% increase.
Since the GTX 1660 Super’s TU116 chip is identical to the one in the original GTX 1660 (only the memory/VRAM is upgraded from GDDR5 to GDDDR6), the TDP is just 125W. Compared to high-end cards that are normally equipped with triple-fan coolers, such as the 320W RTX 3080, a GTX 1660S chip combined with three fans should – all other things being equal – run very cool and quiet.
Other than the memory upgrade from 6GB of GDDR5 to 6GB of GDDR6, there are no major differences compared to the original version. However, the change to GDDR6 improves the memory bandwidth from 192 GB/s to 336 GB/s, which is more than enough to significantly impact performance.
Performance and Features
The GTX 1660S comes in at around the same price point as the original GTX 1660, placing it slightly above the entry-level gaming GPUs but not quite on par with the upper mid-range cards. This GPU should nevertheless be considered (in 2020/early 2021) by anyone looking for a graphics card in the $200–$300 price range. It is nearly as fast as the more expensive GTX 1660 Ti, yet considerably faster than the GTX 1660 that it replaces.
The above results are averages from different systems running these cards and not exact representations of the Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super Gaming (OC). It’s still a relatively accurate comparison of relative GPU performance.
Guru3D (OC model):
… Gigabyte offers one of the fastest SKUs with an 1860 MHz boost clock. However, clock frequencies matter less these days as the more important fact and register seem to become the power limiter.
TechPowerup (OC model):
… It’s the only triple-fan card we’re testing today and achieves good temperatures of 65°C under load—the lowest in our test group. I only wish fan noise were a little bit lower.
- Additional OC potential
- Extra monitor outputs
- Comes with backplate
- Power limited
- Could be quieter
