RTX 2070 Super: AIB List, Specs, and Details

Nvidia RTX 2070 SUPER Founders EditionNvidia’s RTX 2070 Super is an upper mid-range to high-end GPU released on July 9th, 2019 with an MSRP of $499. It is 10-15% faster than the original RTX 2070 and only about 10% slower than the RTX 2080. Its gaming performance is also comparable to the previous-gen GTX 1080 Ti, but like other RTX GPUs, the RTX 2070 Super (or 2070S) offers ray-tracing and DLSS upscaling features.

Nvidia offers a reference Founders Edition model of the 2070S, which features dual fans and a dual-slot design. The reference card comes with a 1605 MHz base frequency and boosts to 1770 MHz, whereas its 8 GB of GDDR5 VRAM (video memory) runs at 1750 MHz or 14 Gbps effective.

The power draw (TDP) is 215 W (1x 6-pin + 1x 8-pin power connectors) and Nvidia recommends a 550 W power supply (PSU) for the RTX 2070S.

RTX 2070 Super AIB Cards

As always, a majority of the RTX 2070 Super graphics cards are produced and sold via Nvidia’s add-in board (AIB) partners. AIB cards come in different shapes and sizes aimed at various use cases and budgets.

Larger triple-fan cards with substantial factory overclocks are typically the most expensive. But in the case of the RTX 2070S, there are also smaller and/or more affordable cards, as well as blower-style cards and small form factor (SFF) variants suited to ITX builds.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 Super GAMING OC Most value-oriented cards are of the dual fan variety, but an additional fan will allow the card to operate at lower temperatures and overall noise levels. One exception is the Gigabyte Gaming OC model, based on the WindForce 3X Cooling System with three alternately spinning fans.

The card comes in a low-key design in black with silver accents. You also get RGB Fusion 2.0 to help you sync the lighting with other supporting parts, but only the top-side logo is RGB-lit on this card. There’s a slight factory OC at 1815 MHz compared to the standard 1770 MHz. In addition, the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC has a metal backplate which adds to the card’s stability.

Unsurprisingly, it’s not as full-featured on the VRM side as the Aorus model but offers an 8+2 power phase design to allow the MOSFET to operate at a lower temperature. The reference design has 7+2 power phases.

Asus’ 2070S Dual adds to a long-running lineup of budget coolers that typically perform quite well considering their compact stature.

ASUS GeForce RTX 2070 Super OverclockedThis card has dual axial fans that have a smaller fan hub and longer blades, which increases the air pressure and keeps that card cool. Although there are Asus Dual cards in many sizes, the RTX 2070 Super has a 2.7-slot design that expands over the surface area to make the most of the two fans. There’s also a protective backplate that keeps the card rigid.

Interestingly, with an 1845 MHz maximum boost clock, the factory OC model offers a higher boost clock than the Strix. For more consistent boost clock speeds, you can put the card in ‘game mode’ and it will run at 1815 MHz. In short, If you are looking for an Asus RTX 2070 Super graphics card, but would rather not pay extra for the Strix ‘bling’, then this is a great card to consider.

Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2070 SUPER

When just looking at the specs, the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2070 Super appears to be a class leader. Gigabyte exceeds the reference design in several areas, including in the number of outputs on offer: 3x HDMI 2.0 ports, 3x DisplayPort 1.4 ports, and one USB Type-C port.

The Aorus logo lights up as well and there is a small display on the card that gives you information at a glance. It comes with a 12+2 Power Phase design in combination with a massive factory overclock – the core clock speed of the card is 1905 MHz, which is much higher than the reference design.

In short, the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2070 SUPER is an extreme card with a high factory OC out of the box and additional overclocking headroom to spare.

Strix RTX 2070 Super

Another highlight from the list is the ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2070 Super. It comes in multiple versions – all with the same overall design and features except for the boost clocks, which is rather confusing. One of them comes with no factory overclock, another with a minor OC, and a third model is significantly boosted out of the box.

Update/Correction: A reader kindly informed us that there is one flavor of the ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2070S with an even higher factory OC than the Aorus. The ROG-STRIX-RTX2070S-O8G-GAMING reaches 1935 MHz in OC mode. Unfortunately, this particular model seems to be very hard to find in the US, but it’s available in Europe. Scroll down for a comparison of ASUS’ 2070S lineup, which is a bit confusing.

Speaking of factory overclocks, you should also be aware that Nvidia is no longer binning their Turing GPUs, i.e. offering higher-quality chips for board partners to use in factory OC’ed cards. In other words, your chances of manually overclocking an RTX 2070 Super GPU successfully will not necessarily improve if you buy a factory overclocked model. The main difference is that you get an OC that is guaranteed to work.

MSI 2070S Gaming Trio

Another premium card worth mentioning is the MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming Z Trio. This is another very large triple-slot card with three fans in an atypical arrangement. It has a boost clock of 1815 MHz and unlike the more affordable models, the MSI card comes with additional RGB lighting.

The Gaming Z Trio’s TRI-FROZR cooler is odd but not unique to the 2070 Super – it’s been tried and tested before and we know that it works. TweakTown considers it “one of the best 2070 SUPER graphics cards on the market”. Just make sure it fits in your case because it’s positively huge at 12.9 x 2.3 x 5.5 inches (328 x 140 x 56.5 mm).

zotac mini 2070 super

This is a short list as there is only one truly compact variety of the RTX 2070S that we are aware of: ZOTAC’s Gaming GeForce RTX 2070 Super Mini.

This card is a very interesting option for anyone who prefers to build small form factor (SFF), console-style gaming PCs in suitably compact mini-ITX or mATX cases. Cramming lots of muscle into a tiny case is always a challenge, but one that Zotac intends to help you solve. The manufacturer’s RTX 2070 Super Mini comes in a format that you are more likely to see in combination with a lower-end GPU: an ultra-compact dual-fan + strictly dual-slot design.

The RTX 2070 Super is the most powerful GPU that Zotac uses in this custom, miniaturized PCB design, which indicates that it pushes the limits. Nonetheless, its thermals are quite impressive according to smallformfactor.net’s review of the card using a Louqe Ghost S1 mITX case. Clearly, there’s a lot to like here for SFF builders and it’s reasonably priced as well.

Nvidia has stopped making blower-style coolers for their reference cards. For good reasons, since this type of cooler often performs worse both in the temperature and noise departments. The design has one clear advantage though, namely that the GPU heat leaves your case in an efficient manner. This is a nice-to-have if your case is crowded and poorly ventilated. So if you have this particular need, you can get a card like the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming.

EVGA GeForce 2070 SUPER GAMING

There is an RGB logo and it has a core clock speed of 1770 MHz, which matches the reference design. The fact that it’s a dual-slot card might also help if you have space constraints.

The Reference Model: Nvidia RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition

Nvidia’s reference design model of the RTX 2070 Super is actually excellent. The Founders Edition card has a boost clock speed of 1770 MHz and a base clock speed of 1605 MHz – the same clock rates seen in all other base models of the 2070S.

Nvidia 2070 SUPER Founders Edition

The 2070 Super Founders Edition is perhaps not the best value for money but it does have a very different look and that is what some people are looking for.

RTX 2070 Super: Technical Details

All GeForce RTX Super graphics cards feature the TU104 graphics processor, which is built on a 12 nm process and supports DirectX 12 Ultimate. This version of DirectX supports hardware-based ray tracing, variable-rate shading, and other modern features that the RTX 2070S has access to.

Additionally, the TU104 GPU has 13.6 billion transistors and utilizes a large die area of 545 mm². Compared to the GeForce RTX 2080 Super (which uses the same chip), the 2070 Super features 2,560 active shaders compared to 3,072 for the 2080S.

The GPU is connected to 8 GB GDDR6 memory over a 256-bit memory bus with a 448 GB/s bandwidth. Most cards use the standard 1750 MHz clock rate for the VRAM, but a small number have a memory overclock out of the box.

  1. Why does this not include the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Gaming Non ultra? It’s actually much better price/performance

  2. What do you mean with RGB output?

  3. Has anyone heard of a OCPC nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super is it like a generic brand of the the real one or something? It’s on the dell website. I just ordered it thinking it was the Nvidia brand one smh

  4. whats the difference between an 2070 gigabyte 2070 gaming and a 2070 windforce? excluding the rgb

    • Hi Zay,
Windforce is what Gigabyte calls its cooling solution (all triple-fan coolers in the case of the 2070S). There are several versions and revisions of these cards, but the main difference is that some have a factory OC and some don’t. “WindForce OC” versions have a boost clock of 1785 MHz or 1815 MHz instead of the reference 1770 MHz, so the difference is not particularly significant.

  5. getttupppp this sites a banger for info muvvasss minge, one mistake does not mean shit you little hoe ass bitch, they gave good info and made me choose the right card for my rig yaaaaa dig!

  6. There is a different version of the EVGA 2070 super gaming that is not listed here it is the 2 fan version of the card

  7. umm your data is wrong here! You didn’t even list Asus Strix 2070S O8G, which is the most powerful 2070S available in the market with 1935Mhz Boost clock whereas Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2070 SUPER is 1905Mhz! I don’t know how you guys make these reports.

    • If you read right it is listed

    • My dude it’s one mistake… it’s the end of the world (not)! Stop winging; It’s a small mistake. These reviews are all in one place and quite detailed. If you think they cannot do a good job. Make a website informing us on different types of graphics cards rather than whining.

    • It seems you’re right! Apparently Asus has no less than three versions of the Strix 2070S in this design and we missed the one with the higher clocks. Will edit the list ASAP, thanks for the helpful info!
